AFTDA Mission Statement

Initialy Presented to members of WFTDA, November 2008

The purpose of this organization is to enhance the sport of roller derby by providing individuals that can contribute insightful, entertaining and pertinent commentary for roller derby events in a:
 
1)public address format,
2)television and/or radio broadcast format which may be produced live or recorded,
3)podcast format for distribution over the internet; for downloading or live streaming.

We will:
• Continually develop and maintain a network of skilled, experienced announcers who are willing to evolve with the sport of roller derby
• Maintain a high level of consistency and proficiency in the art of announcing for roller derby by developing and maintaining baseline standards for roller derby announcers
• Provide learning opportunities for announcers which include (but are not limited to) having tenured and less-experienced announcers’ work together at the less-experienced announcers’ home bout, maintaining a mentoring relationship, pairing less-experienced and tenured announcers together at WFTDA and non-WFTDA tournaments, providing training sessions at conferences, and conducting regional training sessions or retreats.
• Maintain our knowledge of roller derby and its trends by: participating in on-line roller derby discussion groups, consistently reviewing national and regional derby Websites, reading national and regional derby publications, and using recorded bouts to self-critique announcing performance as well as studying league performance. 
• Develop mutually beneficial relationships with key roller derby organizations(e.g. WFTDA), individual leagues, and applicable affiliate roller derby organizations (e.g. referees)
• Assist in shaping a standard of quality for bout production staff in regards to audio reinforcement for public address during live events.
• Define and protect the rights of announcers
• Maintain a code of etiquette that functions as a guideline for announcers during live and broadcast events.
• Maintain a board of directors whose responsibilities include (but are not limited to): the directives of this mission statement.
• Promote the importance of live announcing regarding the promotion and marketing of the sport, skaters, and sponsors.
